“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.” (James 1:5)
“I have been driven many times to my knees by the overwhelming conviction that I had nowhere else to go. My wisdom seemed insufficient for the day.”
Abraham Lincoln
This is exactly where I find myself, not knowing what to do. How do I make up for the broken promises, lies and hurtful words/actions with my wife, children and others? How do I go about seeking forgiveness and making amends? How are we going to pay the bills? I don’t know what to do.
I know that prayer is the key to knowing what to do. God and God alone can answer the questions of my heart and guide me in the path I should go. I read a statistic that said the average Christian spends less than 3 minutes a day in prayer. That is less than three minutes a day in asking for wisdom from the one who is all-knowing.
A great friend reminded me this week how important it is to be in the scriptures regularly by sending me this from an email he received:
Ever wonder what real difference reading the Bible daily can make in a person’s life? This week I came across a video from John Bevere and Scott Lindsey who work with the Logos Bible Software team sharing just that. It turns out that not much happens if someone only reads the Bible 1-3 times per week, but thing change significantly when they read 4 or more times weekly.
They found that for people who read the Bible 4 or more times weekly, the percentage of people reporting…
- feeling lonely drops 30%
- anger issues drops 32%
- bitterness in relationships drops 40%
- alcohol abuse drops 57%
- feeling spiritually stagnant drops 60%
James is calling us to stop living life without prayer and ask God for wisdom. Someone wisely said,
“It is good to pray for the repair of mistakes, but praying earlier would keep us from making so many… when puzzled, go to prayer and listen.”
God will not turn a deaf ear to the prayer prayed in faith. Help is available. Scripture says, “Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
When I do not know what to do I can ask God for wisdom.
“Heaven is full of answers to prayers for which no one ever bothered to ask.”
Billy Graham
